    The New Jersey Equine Advisory Board has announced a new $1,000 scholarship to help 4-H or FFA members pursue equine activities. The first Sara Dubinin Scholarship, in memory of Sara Dubinin, who loved horses, will be presented at the New Jersey Bred Equine Breeder Awards Dinner on Jan. 31, 2010.

    Cardinal McCarrick High School, 310 Augusta St., South Amboy, is hosting an open house for prospective students and their families 6:30-8 p.m. Nov. 11. There will be a tour of the school and a chance to meet the principal, teachers and staff. Light refreshments will be served.

    After serving nearly six years as a Sayreville councilman, Stanley Drwal has removed his bid for reelection this fall in order to focus on treatment for conditions relating to his military service. Drwal said he fought with the decision to drop out of the council race but ultimately decided another active campaign would be too difficult on his health at this time.

    Mr. Iko, 66, of Effort, Pa., formerly of Helmetta and the Parlin section of Sayreville, died June 9, 2009, in Geisinger Hospital West, Wilkes Barre, Pa. Prior to his retirement in 2002, he was a bus driver for Cardinal McCarrick High School, South Amboy. His first wife, Christine Modzelewski Iko, died in 1999.

    The Jersey Fusion, a first-year women's semi-pro basketball team, has gotten off to a fast start. The 3-1 Fusion play at the Red Bank Salvation Army as a first-year team for the Women's Blue Chip Basketball League. The Fusion are coached and owned by former Monmouth University player Audrey Taylor.

    The high school baseball season came to a close earlier this month when the area's top seniors met at the Greater Middlesex Conference Senior All-Star game. Coached by JFK High School's Jerry Smith Jr. and Bishop Ahr High School's Scott Runkel, the Blue & White All-Stars defeated the Red & Gold, 5-3.
