    ■ The N.C. Division of Marine Fisheries said this week that the number of finfish caught in N.C. waters by recreational fishermen dropped about 18 percent in 2008. The total fell to about 12 million fish, even though the number of recreational-fishing trips remained roughly the same, at 7 million.

    □ LeBrandon Banner of Winston-Salem and Karis Maffett of Thomasville are two area students who are members of a new gospel choir at Lenoir-Rhyne University. The choir, organized by Emma Sellers, area coordinator and director of multicultural student services, consists of approximately 20 black students.

    KERNERSVILLE — Veritas Sports Academy has suspended operations while school officials try to find a way to pay off more than $2 million in debt.
