Cory Klingsporn’s response to the final two words of the Ventura County Star Spelling Bee was the same: a quick, confused “Sorry?” But he wasn’t. The 14-year-old Oxnard home-schooler sailed through “yiddishkeit” and then “deprecatory” to claim his second straight county spelling bee championship Monday night and a trip to Washington, D.C., for the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

While some students shed tears when they lose a spelling bee, 13-year-old John Scuoler was overcome with emotion when he won. John, an eighth-grader at Good Shepherd Lutheran School in Simi Valley, hugged his parents and got teary-eyed after he won Monday’s spelling bee at Medea Creek Middle School in Oak Park.
