  • Montgomery School 5th Graders work with Environmental Scientists ()
posted on October 10, 2009 at 12:00:00 am
On Thursday, October 8th, 5th graders from Montgomery School hosted a team of scientists from the Ruth Patrick Center for Environmental Research (a program at the Academy of Natural Sciences.) The scientists assisted the students in conducting an in-depth study of Pickering Creek, which runs through Montgomery School's 60-acre campus. The study is part of an environmental grant to develop in the students an appreciation for the natural world, an awareness of the environmental issues that face the planet, and the 21st century skills required to work collaboratively in an increasingly technology-based globally-diverse atmosphere to create sustainable solutions to the problems we face. Through this hands-on program, Montgomery's 5th graders develop an understanding and appreciation for sustainable watershed management and conservation. They learn about how human activity has affected our waters and they develop sustainable practices and solutions that will improve the quality of our streams. The Patrick Center for Environmental Research is a multi-disciplinary group of environmental scientists and engineers which is devoted to understanding the natural processes and human impacts on the land and water ecosystems in our region. The group plays a vital role in developing watershed-level strategies and policies to protect and enhance the environmental health of our area.
