  • Hutchison Hosts Princeton Global Health Speakers
posted on February 6, 2013 at 04:03:25 pm
Global health and advocacy experts Kristina Graff and Ashley Zlatinov spoke at Hutchison School last week as a part of the Hutchison Leads global speaker series, “Global Scholars, Global Leaders”. Graff, the director of global health programs at Princeton University, and Zlatinov, a researcher at Mathematica Policy Research and a Princeton graduate student, spoke with Hutchison girls on issues of global health and advocacy and worked with them to develop impactful resolutions to health issues both globally and locally. “Involving women at a young age in critical global leadership opportunities is essential for societies to thrive and grow politically, economically, and socially,” said Zlatinov. Throughout their two day visit to Memphis and Hutchison, Graff and Zlatinov worked directly with students on global health issues such as malaria and other health and environmental aspects that many people face around the world. “I am deeply impressed by their curiosity, engagement, and motivation to make the world a better place,” said Zlatinov regarding her interactive discussions with Hutchison students. Zlatinov and Graff participated in class discussions within several upper school classes. The 9th grade honors biology class discussed malaria and the effects of the environment on health threats. In the AP human geography class, discussions turned to global health research and potential intervention methods for problematic issues. Conversations in the class took a unique twist when Zlatinov redefined the meaning of global for the girls. “‘Global’ does not only mean ‘developing countries’, but by definition includes the entire world, including right here in Memphis,” said Zlatinov. “There are many important issues that need solving in the U.S.” She explained that global health issues are “extremely multifaceted and complex, requiring the engagement and dialogue with individuals to learn more.” Students worked in small case study groups to brainstorm how to eliminate childhood obesity within Memphis, in the United States and around the world. Although class time ran short, conversations centered on the effects of combatting the problem and the potential effects on local economies as well as future generations. They cited the need for educational programs focused on healthy lifestyles ...
