    On November 10, the 9th grade English class explored the tide pools at Montana De Oro to deepen their understanding of John Steinbeck's novel, Cannery Row. The main character, Doc, is a marine biologist who collects sea life for a living. Midland's own "Docs", Lise and Jeff Goddard (who also co-teach Midland's Marine Biology class), led the students as they examined tide pool creatures. Having a fuller understanding of tide pool ecology, students could intelligently discuss Steinbeck's comparisons between marine life and the community of Cannery Row. The connections between the human neighborhood and the sea run through the novel. ...
