Kirsten Vea, a sixth-grader at Santa Clara Elementary School in Oxnard, was sure she was finished. In round 8 of the Area 3 spelling bee Monday at Rio Real School in El Rio, she misspelled “cavalry,” adding an extra “l” to the first syllable.
