Gateway Academy seeks students whom: Have a primary diagnosis of a High Functioning Autism/Asperger’s Syndrome/PDD-nos by a respected clinician. Seek an academic program that has an emphasis on social skill development. Have above average to average Verbal IQ (90 or above), as measured by a standardized assessment instrument. Demonstrate motivation by the student and his/her parents to become part of Gateway Academy. Present no significant behavior problems. Any behavioral problem must be able to be controlled by verbal intervention without use of physical intervention. Areas of Concern. These issues would warrant a more detailed interview process and possible denial of admissions: History of physical aggression, but only under particular circumstances (as a result of environmental triggers) that is related to the neurocognitive diagnosis.Some intermittent behavior problems, but a long history of success in alternative classroom or setting. Poor ability to self-regulate, need for intensive 1:1 attention. Limited ability to work independently. History of drug abuse or addiction. Assessments all evaluations (Psycho-educational, Neurological, Speech and Language, Occupational Therapy, and Standardized Educational Testing) must be current (3 years), and, if not, families must commit to having updated evaluations completed prior to admission, or when the 3 year mark is reached.
