School Notes

Great minds don't think alike!

Summit Academy is an independent, non-profit school that provides a place where each student's learning challenges are understood and met using a whole child approach, a place where we celebrate and develop a child's strengths and address their area of difficulty. It's a safe place where each young learner is treated and educated as an individual in an atmosphere of caring and respect that allows our students to succeed.

Goals

  • Help every student view school as a positive, challenging, and successful experience.
  • Narrow the gap between a child's academic achievement and academic potential as measured by standardized testing.
  • Create a supportive community that includes families, staff, and teachers working together.
  • Establish a scholarship endowment so that every family that needs financial aid will receive it.
  • Continue to be a dynamic entity, continually improving, changing, and growing in response to the needs of our students and to the latest knowledge gained through educational research.

Philosophy

We believe:
  • Every student should feel valued and necessary.
  • Every student is unique and has unique strengths and weaknesses.
  • Students deserve to be taught in a way that allows them to be successful.
  • Students need individual attention from educators to properly assess and address their needs.
  • Students must have the earliest possible intervention to mitigate the effects of learning differences on their academic success and emotional well-being.
  • Students need an emotionally safe environment to learn.
  • Students need a school that addresses their social, emotional, physical, and academic needs.
  • Students need a joint cooperative commitment between family and school to be successful.
  • Students benefit from the use of technology as an instructional tool.
Because of our philosophy:
  • Students are assessed on an ongoing basis to guide instruction and monitor progress.
  • Students are taught with the most adaptive, best-practice teaching strategies to meet the student's changing needs.
  • Students are taught organizational and compensatory skills regularly in the daily curriculum.
  • Students will have a very low student/teacher ratio in every class.
  • Children aged four and five have a specialized Pre-K and Kindergarten program to provide early intervention for learning differences.
  • Students are educated in a structured, secure environment of mutual respect.
  • Students enjoy a complete curriculum that includes art, music, computer instruction, library science, recess, and physical education.
  • Students have extra-curricular activities that correspond to their current interests and abilities.
  • Students` parents and teachers communicate with each other regularly.
  • Students are introduced to and use technology as part of the instructional process.

Amazing caring environment that changed my son's life for the better

Summit Academy is a progressive, academically-challenging school for bright kids who have diagnosed learning differences. My child has been saved academically by the small class size, individualized approach to teaching, and the caring staff. She has self-confidence that non-existent prior to Summit. She will be able to attend any high school in the area, public, private or parochial.

Summit Academy is an excellent school for any student who struggles with learning differences. My child was enrolled in an excellent private school, however, his academic needs were not being met and so I transferred him to Summit. Not only is he learning and thriving in the classes, his behavior, attitude and general happiness has improved in and out of school. The teachers and staff are experienced, caring, and extremely knowledgeable about the many different ways to teach the same concept to fit the learning needs of individual students. As a parent and an educator (working at a different school), I highly recommend Summit Academy as a school where every child truly does learn.

I highly recommend this school for children who learn differently! My child did not thrive in the public school arena, it was too large to tend to her needs. She is in an environment now that focuses on her, not a test score or curriculum. She is in drama, cheerleading, archery, and talent shows. She is thriving in math, a subject that is difficult for her but no longer daunting. Her advanced reading strengths are celebrated. She is confident and blossoming. The curriculum will have her prepared for a local private parochial high school that I would never have thought she could attend 5 years ago.
