    Bryan Tan, a sixth grader at Alpha Beacon Christian School in San Mateo, came in 13th overall out of 46 students from around the nation who competed in the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) national spelling bee held in May in Washington, D.C. He placed third among four top contestants in the regional Sacramento ACSI bee, qualifying for nationals.

    Art became a passion for Heejin “Maryanne” Kim at a young age. While in public elementary school, Kim began taking extra art classes at an academy to qualify for Yewon Arts Middle School in Korea. The work paid off and Kim was admitted.

    Six-year-old Sam Valiant searched through the open areas at Indian Springs Park in San Mateo Thursday looking for the perfect rock. Valiant strained to carry a rock, which he described to be just as heavy as it looked, to the rock-based creek that streamed through the park.
