School Notes:

  • Academy students typcially have average to above average intelligence, but many different learning styles.  They often come to us frustrated, confused and struggling academically.  The Academy provides a positive, nurturing environment in which students feel accepted for who they are, and provides an environment in which they are able to learn how to learn.   Our expert instruction is designed to target and build on student strengths, while remediating weaker areas, leading to growth in academic skills and self confidence. Students discover their best learning style and are prepared for their next step, be that college, a job, or a transfer back to a larger middle or high school.

Instruction at Ann Arbor Academy is multisensory, differentiated, and experiential.  We do not assume that a child is at a certain skill level because they are a certain age – most of our students have not picked up essential skills in their previous school, while some are gifted and have moved far beyond what would be expected of someone at their grade level.  Part of what makes us different is that we recognize that the same student may have both of these characteristics, in different areas of academic and social functioning, and we differentiate the student’s educational goals and the mode of delivery accordingly.

Our emphasis on executive functioning - skills such as time management, organization, working memory, etc., allows us to view each child as an individual learner.  Ann Arbor Academy's approach is unique and flexible because we are able to determine where in a continuum of skill level each student falls in terms of these crucial skills for learning, and to help them work to their full potential by differentiating the delivery and assessment of the curriculum to build on student strengths and remediate relative weaknesses.

Although teenagers with learning differences graduate from high school less often than their same age peers, our graduation rate is 98% (including students who matriculate from the Academy as well as students who were with us for at least two years of high school or middle school and then transferred to a larger, often public, high school).  85% of our students go to college, and those who do not are linked up with state agencies that help students get a job and develop a career, always with the goal of living as independently as possible.
