Only one of the 12 Michigan spellers -- and last year's runner up -- is among the top 50 moving on to the semifinalist round Thursday morning in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington.

A dozen kids from Michigan -- including three from Metro Detroit -- began competition today in the annual Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington.

They'll be dusting off the dictionaries and minding the P's and Q's when the National Spelling Bee begins Tuesday in Washington. Some 293 spellers from around the United States and Canada will compete in the three-day event, including 12 children from Michigan.
