SAYREVILLE — Students at Our Lady of Victories School recently sent care packages and letters to U.S. Marine Cpl. Carlos "Speedy" Gonzalez, a Middlesex County native serving in Iraq. Gonzalez, 26, of Perth Amboy, is on his second tour of duty there with the 2nd Battalion 25th Marines G Company 1st Platoon, which is based out of Picatinny Arsenal in Dover.

The school is slated to close June 30 due to declining enrollment but many in the parish hope to stave off the closure. While the protesters were rallying and praying outside, Bishop Thomas Donato was meeting with a committee inside.
