School Reviews

  • Recommended March 22, 2014 - We have the privilege of being wardlaw parents for 3 years now and are very happy with our decision. Living in a neighborhood where the public schools are not that bad, it is a really difficult decision for parents to invest in a private school. The main factor that impresses us is the small class size of not more than 12 in a class ( a total school strength of 400) which lets the teachers really bond with the children over the year and know their strengths and weakness in order to provide a more customized education. The kids who need help in some classes are given extra help and the kids who are smarter are challenged more with optional activities and assignments and encouraged to be peer leaders for their friends and other classmates right from the elementary school. Public speaking is taught and is an essential unit right from 2nd grade.Creative writing, technology, spanish are some of the other skills that they instill in an early learner. The standard of education in liberal arts and humanities can definitely not be compared with any public school curriculum. The children are constantly encouraged to read, write and publish materials at every level. The curriculum and courses offered in middle and high school are highly comparable to the best private schools in the tristate area. The teachers are highly educated, very experienced in the subject and unlike the typical private school teacher who looks down upon the common "man", they are very friendly and easy to talk to. The only big ''negative'' that can be said about the school is the not so impressive college profile with many high school students not being selected in the Ivies. It also needs a much more stronger college counsellor board compared to its peers like Pingry, newark academy or Princeton day school even though their tuition are all almost the same. The only factor that makes many parents stick to this school in spite of these issues is the more comfortable atmosphere that the school creates unlike the cut throat and cold Pingry school. And yes, in my opinion, the '' atmosphere'' is very important too as children are more likely to perform their best where there are understanding teachers who appropriately challenge and guide them rather than a pressure cooker type environment. - Posted by Parent
