Christian school systems in Yucaipa and Corona are bucking a national trend by expanding. The Yucaipa Valley Christian School District was established in July with the intent of adding a middle school and high school to the existing Yucaipa Christian Schools, which offers preschool through sixth-grade classes. "We're going to phase in gradually," said administrator Jim Cochran.

Crossroads Christian Schools leaders think the time is right to start Corona's first private Christian high school this fall, even in a bad economy when some parents are losing their jobs. The school plans to add ninth grade this fall and another grade each year until its first class graduates in 2013. "We feel like there's a need in the community," Superintendent Beth Frobisher said.
