Alexander was founded in 1888 in Charlotte as a women and children's rescue mission.
In 1945, the agency began transitioning to serve children with emotional and behavioral problems.
Alexander serves North Carolina children ages 5-18. Children served in residential programs come from nearly three quarters of the counties in North Carolina.
Alexander provides a comprehensive array of children's behavioral healthcare services in four basic categories: outpatient, day treatment, residential, and community-based services.
Children ages 5 to 18 are referred to Alexander from North Carolina’s Area Mental Health programs, hospitals, physicians, parents, schools, county departments of social services and from the state’s juvenile justice system.
