Violet Carrigan writes in her journal every night until her candle burns out. During the day the 12-year-old is busy behind the counter in her father's general store. She also sews, buys food at the market for dinner and practices her arithmetic.

As part of their curriculum, McGuffey Foundation School students are taught to give back to their community and others in need. They pack holiday baskets and collect donations for the local food bank, make decorations and volunteer with Oxford Empty Bowls, hold bake sales for hurricane victims and collect for UNICEF.
