School Notes:

  • Academics
Academic excellence, whether it be innovative curriculum that challenges students minds or special programs that insure the highest level of success for each student, forms the cornerstone of the academic experience at Monte Cassino. Add state-of-the-art libraries and technologically enhanced classrooms and you have an environment that provides students with all the elements necessary for academic success.

Monte Cassino's Academic programs take the best from time-tested learning and combines it with the latest in current educational tools and programs to create an atmosphere where students are challenged to be their best and to develop a love of learning that will last a lifetime.

    School-Wide Programs
    Schools Attuned
Schools Attuned is an educational program for all levels in school. Dr. Mel Levine, creator of Schools Attuned and the All Kinds of Minds Institute, and his colleagues developed this teaching method based on their work in brain body learning. It gives teachers the tools to recognize and teach children with a wide range of learning characteristics. The program includes curriculum materials for teachers, assessment tools and other products to increase teachers' and administrators' awareness of learning challenges.

Schools Attuned at Monte Cassino School benefits all students. Understanding how students learn and the use of techniques that help children with learning challenges can benefit all students in the classroom. Many times one or two strategies that a teacher is using to help a struggling child benefit every child in that classroom.

The value of the Schools Attuned program and acknowledgement of how well Monte Cassino teachers had integrated the programs teaching methods into the School's curriculum was received when then Oklahoma First Lady Cathy Keating visited Monte Cassino to learn more about the Schools Attuned program.

Monte Cassino has also been named a National Schools Attuned Exemplary School by All Kinds of Minds. The School received this honor in recognition of how well it had implemented Schools Attuned throughout its campus.

The Schools Attuned teaching model is an integral part of Monte Cassino's curriculum and is helping to ensure that all students, whatever their learning style may be, reach their highest potential and benefit from the greatest degree of learning success.

    Integrated Thematic Instruction
In the I.T.I. model, developed by Susan Kovalik and Associates, teachers learn that each student has a variety of intelligences and a number of different learning patterns. Teachers develop strategies to help students:

    • Store information in long-term memory

    • Classify information by type and recognize patterns

    • Solve problems, both individually, and as a team

    • Learn to think creatively

    • Learn to think critically

In addition, teachers set up their classrooms in the ITI model, adding touches such as lamps to provide ambient lighting, seating areas that invite students to read for pleasure, and organizational prompts such as posted procedures, agendas and materials needed to complete the work for the day.

    Tribes Learning Communities (TLC)
The Tribes process gives teachers the tools to foster the healthy development of every child, so that each one has the knowledge, skills and resiliency to be successful in a rapidly changing world.
In the TLC model, students achieve because they:

    • Feel included and appreciated by peers and teachers

    • Are respected for their different abilities, cultures, gender, interests and dreams

    • Are actively involved in their own learning

    • Have positive expectations from others that they will succeed

    Administration & Board
Monte Cassino has been owned and operated by the Benedictine Sisters since 1926. The School Director and the School Board Chairman are appointed by the Benedictine Prioress, the head of the Benedictine Community. Both the School Director and Board Chairman work with the Principals of the Early Childhood Learning Center, Elementary School, and Middle School to ensure both the highest educational standards and a safe, nurturing environment in which students can excel. In addition, these administrators interact closely with all Monte Cassino Heads of Departments: Admissions, After School Care, Athletics, Business Office, Development, Records and Technology.

The Benedictine Sisters share their communal life of prayer and their love for God with the school community. The School Board, in consultation with the monastic council, provides policies, guidance and support to the administration as they focus on bringing the Monte Cassino mission to each student by planning the best educational system possible, empowering dedicated employees, and benefiting from the wisdom of parent communication.
