    It was the dawn of the civil rights era. The U.S. Supreme Court had outlawed public school segregation, sparking hope across a divided nation that black children would finally have the same chance as white children to get an education. As many in South Carolina rallied against integration, that promise dimmed. Except at one school in Rock Hill.

    The Olde English Leathernecks, a local Marine Corps League Detachment, will kick off the annual Toys for Tots Campaign and the 234th birthday of the U.S. Marine Corps with a ball from 6:30 to 11 p.m. Nov. 7 at the Palmetto Room, 135 E. Main St., Rock Hill.
