German and Wendish Lutherans began settling in the Thorndale area in the 1880’s and brought with them their deep spiritual and educational hopes and dreams. Services for William D. “Bill” Payne, 86, of Rockdale were Monday, March 16, 2009, at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home with Rev. Jack Chelf of First Baptist Church officiating. Burial was in IOOF Cemetery.
