On a typical Monday, school starts with an hour of davening for Shari Rosenman’s two children. They next spend two hours with a music teacher and work with online grammar and math curricula before unwinding with lunch and recess at a local park.

Maimonides Academy went into lockdown for a short time on Monday afternoon after the rapper Dolla was shot and killed at the Beverly Center on La Cienega Boulevard, a block away from the school.

There were no Lag B’Omer bonfires blazing on the Santa Monica Pier on Monday night, but the flashing neon lights of carnival rides illuminated the night sky for a communitywide gathering of Sephardic Jews. No potatoes were roasted in a fire pit, but skewers of kosher beef sizzled on a grill.
