    Collegiate spotted St. Catherine’s a goal then rallied for a 3-1 victory in the VISAA Division I field hockey tournament final yesterday at Collegiate’s Robins Campus in Goochland County. A noisy crowd of about 400 watched the Cougars (20-3) win their sixth state title, but it was the first time the local rivals had played each other in the final.

    Despite the cold, wet and wind, the Collegiate and St. Catherine’s field hockey teams warmed to the task in the semifinals of the Virginia Independent Schools Division I tournament. Top-seeded Collegiate defeated Episcopal 1-0 (OT, 2-0 on strokes) and No. 3 seed St. Catherine’s eliminated second-seeded St. Stephen’s/St. Agnes 1-0 yesterday on the turf at Collegiate’s main campus.

    There’s a saying: “If you can’t run with the big dogs, stay on the porch.” On Tuesday night, the third-seeded host Liberty Christian Academy Bulldogs’ volleyball team proved to be top dog as it knocked off the No. 6-seeded Norfolk Academy Bulldogs, 25-17, 21-25, 25-19, 25-21 in the Virginia Independent Schools Division I state quarterfinals.
