The selection of the Urbanna Oyster Festival Queen is a long-standing tradition that dates back to 1960, the year before Urbanna Days became the Urbanna Oyster Festival. The first queen was crowned on a flatbed trailer on the day of the festival.

A little rain didn’t put a damper on enthusiasm as Gloucester and Mathews public schools opened Tuesday with few problems, according to the superintendents of the two school districts.

The Gloucester County Board of Supervisors has three public hearings scheduled for its regular meeting, scheduled for Tuesday, beginning at 7 p.m. in the colonial courthouse. Public hearings will begin at 8 p.m.

Big storms put lights out here and there (Gloucester-Mathews Gazette-Journal)

A series of thunderstorms caused scattered power outages throughout portions of Gloucester and Mathews counties Tuesday. A Dominion Virginia Power spokesman said Wednesday that a total of approximately 11,500 customers in the two counties lost power for varying amounts of time.
