Montessori Elementary of Chico began in 1987, (previously known as Montessori Children’s Center). The intent was and is to provide quality education within the context of mutual joy and respect. The elementary program is for children ages five to twelve years old. The current program provides a strong basis in the traditional academic areas of Math, Reading, Spelling, Handwriting, and Language Arts in addition to Botany, Zoology, History, Geography, Geometry, Music, Drama, Art, and Spanish. Physical Education, including group games, aerobics, yoga, and Tai-chi, is also included in the curriculum. In June of 2007, a parent group purchased the school which received its official not-for-profit status in December, 2007.
