The Creekside School

540 Sands Drive Building, San Jose, CA, 95125
We are dedicated to serving children who have challenges in interacting and communicating with the world around them. We strive to discover untapped potential often overlooked due to communicative and/or sensory motor-based issues through use of the DIR Model created by Drs. Greenspan and Wieder. We focus on a team approach - our classes are co-taught by a special educator, a speech-language pathologist, and an occupational therapist. We blend multiple methodologies within the DIR framework to tailor each student's curriculum specifically for them according to their learning style.

School Notes:

  • General Curriculum and Classroom Intervention: We implement the DIR® Model to address the California State Standards using the Houghton Mifflin Kindergarten Curriculum. Together, our Special Educator, Speech-Language Pathologist, Occupational Therapist and Teaching Assistant coordinate experience-based activities according to each of our student's individual learning styles.
  • A Total Communication Approach: Our Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) helps our children communicate using speech, sign language, Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS), voice output devices, and other assistive technology. These tools are implemented according to the unique needs of each child. Our SLP also addresses motor speech difficulties, auditory processing issues, as well as other communication related difficulties our students may encounter. This Total Communication Approach teaches our students the tools necessary to communicate functionally across environments and allows for student-directed communication. Our students learn multiple ways to initiate and respond to people, make their wants and needs known, and appropriately comment on their surroundings.
  • Sensory Regulation and Motor Planning: Occupational therapy (OT) addresses a person's ability to interpret and use their senses (hearing, sight, touch, taste, and smell) effectively to regulate their response to the environment. Through treatment, students can achieve optimal levels of functioning while at school, home, and in the community. OT also addresses how a student uses their body in a variety of ways. Therapeutic goals can address gross and fine motor development, visual-perceptual skills, sensory modulation, motor sequencing, self-care, independent living, and prevocational skills. Students are provided with opportunities to receive beneficial sensory input as needed, thus enabling them to participate more fully in their daily activities. In addition to individual and group services, the occupational therapy department offers consultative services to the student's families and to the school staff.
  • Additional Services: Floortime - Our team utilizes this method to help our students gain solid developmental functioning to enhance their foundational skills.
  • Assistive Technology: This includes curriculum taught through computer-based programs via touch screen, visuals, and alternative and augmentative communication strategies. Our staff are skilled in assessing individual assistive technology needs.
  • Social Skills Group: Our students have the benefit of interacting with typically developing children both during the day and in after school programs.
  • Enrichment (music, art, etc.): We have skilled therapists come in weekly to augment our program.
  • Parent Training and Support: Our Home Facilitator conducts sessions both in the students' home and community to assist families in achieving personal goals for their child outside the classroom.

Here are a dozen or so girls' schools' public thoughts about themselves and their missions.

Make Summer a Special Time! Make Summer a Special Time!
If you have children in private school, then you are most likely looking at three months, perhaps even longer, which you must fill with activities of one kind or another during the long summer break.

Are You Liable? Are You Liable?
Is your DEL key about to get gaveled? It doesn't matter whether you teach in a public or private school setting. You expose yourself to legal risks every single day on the job.
