Running River School is dedicated to meaningful, intelligent, experiential, nature based and contemplative education.
We are a small school that is able to balance every aspect of education: an excellent academic program including all subjects and an integrated yearly environmental theme; the Arts; contemplative practices; nourishing a foundation for life long health (physical fitness and homemade organic lunches); life skills, camping and spending weekly time in nature, and a strong emphasis on communication and social skills.
Our middle school  students pursue their interests and passions through mentored, individualized project based learning, as well as  learn team work and community living.
They travel up to 4 times a year and contribute in every way to the running and continual growth of the entire school.
We build community through parent involvement and education, and school service projects both locally and globally.
We seek to transform our present culture through building an alternative model of education based on deeply connecting children and parents to themselves, humanity and the planet.

School Reviews

Running River is a wonderful school that emphasizes whole child education. We have seen our son thrive academically as well as socially. He is attempting and achieving goals that only a few months ago would have been daunting. We are thrilled with the responsiveness of the teachers and how the different ages interact and support each other. Additionally, the balance of outdoor/ indoor, structured/ unstructured, and movement/ quiet has been a wonderful fit. We feel lucky to be here.

Running River provides a meaningful, experiential and contemplative education for children in grades K-8. This fast growing 14-year old school is focused on awakening and developing every child?''s unique gifts, talents and passions through an integrated, nature- and project-based curriculum, keeping the children excited and engaged intellectually, physically, emotionally and spiritually. Teachers skillfully balance every important aspect of childhood education, which includes an excellent academic program covering subjects within an integrated environmental theme, emphasizing the Arts, teaching of life skills, contemplative practices and physical fitness. The school encourages the building a foundation for life-long health and well being by spending time in nature every week while maintaining a strong emphasis on personal communication and social skills. Authentic learning is achieved in small classrooms using a collaborative, creative, challenging approach, filled with opportunities for exploration and discovery of how things work, fostering a real love of learning and deep connection to self, others and the planet. Community is built through parental involvement and education, along with participation in school service projects both locally and globally. Running River?''s Middle School has expanded into a progressive 3-year program using thematic modules to integrate academics, real-life learning and community living, with meaningful and useful work.

Running River has provided my children with an education that is deeper than just academics. Their philosophy of educating the whole child has really worked. We have seen that the happier and more balanced they are in all aspects, the better their academic success is.
