It's 1663 and small children are reading by candlelight and mashing berries to make ink, which they will dip their quills in to write. Bonnets are on their small heads as they laugh and churn butter for their lunches, packed in pails and baskets. This was the scene inside of Sally Hover's third-grade classroom Tuesday morning at Einstein Academy, a private school in north central Elgin.

Ask most 11-year-olds where Dubai is, and you probably will get some entertaining answers. To be honest, most adults might have difficulty placing the center of trade and tourism in the United Arab Emirates. Elgin resident Humza Ahmad can tell you where it is and also inform you that it is his favorite place he has traveled in his 11 years.

Imagine buying a new car. Now, on top of that, imagine paying the same amount each year to keep your children in school. This is an expense that some parents are willing to pay to send their children to private school. In a shifting economy, some parents are making the sacrifices, and others have no choice but to reluctantly pull their children out in an effort to stay afloat financially.
