    Barely five years after Fort Wayne officially became a city, three couples bought a lot on the south side of Jefferson Street between Hanna and Francis streets. Their mission, as becomes clear in deeds recorded later, was to build a church for what was then a relatively new denomination - the African Methodist Episcopal Church.
