ASA Academy & Community Science Center is an independent, nonsectarian, not-for-profit private school at 2811 Adeline Street, Oakland, CA. ASA was founded in 2000 and serves grades 6-9, adding a grade each year until Grade 12. ASA commits to developing African-American and traditionally underrepresented youth into young men and women who exhibit academic excellence, entrepreneurship, self-sufficiency, critical thinking, and the belief in themselves as valuable contributors to society. Our students are not only prepared for college but fully prepared young adults for success in any endeavor after their high school education. ASA students learn strong sense-of-self, working to create strength and awareness to be powerfull co-creators in their education, lives and communities. ASA Academy has been specifically designed to address the unique needs of African-American youth. ASA Academy was founded on the premise that genius is in every child. With the appropriate program structure, environment, and personnel, that genius is unleashed in order to accommodate and facilitate the academic excellence and personal greatness that is a destined part of every African-American child. Girls here and abroad are helping to create an online game that will allow their peers around the world to explore the cosmos -- and perhaps lead to careers in software development and IT. "The Universe Quest Game" is being made possible by a $1.5 million grant from the National Science Foundation to researchers at UC Berkeley.
