- The Redmont School in the Waldorf Tradition’s preschool program, rich in language, artistic and practical activities, lays a firm foundation for its academically rigorous, deeply engaging elementary curriculum. Young children absorb the world primarily through their senses and respond in the most active mode of knowing: imitation. In the nursery, children play at cooking, they dress up and become mothers and fathers, kings and queens; they sing, paint, and color; they build houses out of chairs, sheets, and blocks. To become fully engaged in such work is the child's best preparation for life, as such play builds powers of concentration, abstract thought, and self-awareness. Kindergartners spend progressively longer periods of time engaged in active learning as teachers present stories and songs with more detail and depth. Listening and participating in story-telling lengthens their attention spans, develops phonological awareness and increases gross motor skills. Activities such as painting, beeswax modeling, and simple sewing increase their fine motor skills and eye-hand coordination. The daily schedule, or rhythm, is carefully planned to provide consistency for the young child, thereby increasing the child’s sense of security.
- In the elementary and middle school, the developmentally appropriate, multi-sensory presentation of every subject stimulates active involvement of every child in the learning process. Our curriculum encompasses core academics, vocal and instrumental music, two foreign languages, physical and environmental education and handwork. Core academic subjects are taught through methods that reach every learning style so that no child is left behind. Active lessons are balanced with desk work so children stay alert and able to learn. Two foreign languages are taught immersion style throughout the eight grades, expanding intellectual capacity and creating an understanding of the wider world. Physical education progresses from learning to jump rope to competing in annual pentathlon competitions. Handwork moves from simple finger knitting in first grade to building furniture in eighth grade. Environmental awareness begins as early as nursery school with tasks as simple as dying fabric with flowers, and grows into studies of erosion on the playgrounds and the cultivation of a sustainable garden which provides fruits and vegetables for snacks. All subjects emphasize a respect for fellow students and for the earth. Through a multi-faceted approach to teaching, Waldorf education gives students a solid foundation of knowledge and of virtue, and the ability to meet adulthood with confidence.
