School Notes

  • We want students to love where they learn. With 11:1 classes, students get hands-on learning and teachers give real feedback instead of grades.
  • Your child will learn the same skills they would in a traditional school but have fun doing it. AHB students love learning because they feel connected to the community and participate in group discussions and meaningful projects.
  • Community is huge at AHB. No drop off lines: families can chat with teachers and friends each morning and afternoon. Parents are encouraged to get involved and receive a weekly class newsletter.
  • Our condensed schedule is key to preventing student and teacher burnout. We offer core curriculum (math, ELA, science, history) in a 9-2:30, Mon-Thurs schedule. Optional before and after-school classes and Friday Extension offer STEM, art, music and physical activity.

AHB has been a breath of fresh air. We have a bright and energetic son who was getting lost in the public school system. His love of learning was dwindling, and the large class sizes and monotonous work were daunting to him. He is proud to be a part of the AHB community, where outside-the-box thinking is encouraged through project-based and thematic learning. It's not only about the grade but about the how and the why, leading to curious and thoughtful educational experiences. We are so glad we made the switch to AHB and feel confident in his personal and academic growth.

A few years ago my 3rd grader was struggling in public school and absolutely hated school. We tried everything and realized it just wasn't working. We needed to make a change. I had heard about AHB through friends and decided to move him there. Now he is so happy and actually looks forward to going to school. He loves the smaller class size and the friendships he has created. AHB was a lifesaver for us. You can tell that the teachers are happy to be there, enjoy teaching, and love their students. The community of families is wonderful! I only wish we had moved to AHB sooner.

This approach to learning should be the standard. Coming from a play-based learning preschool, this is the natural progression to cultivate future growth in all aspects of a child. I feel lucky to have found AHB and will be happy to have my next two little ones join the school when they are old enough.

We are so grateful that we found AHB! After our unexpected leap into homeschooling our then kindergartener during the pandemic, we learned that there were aspects to homeschooling that we loved. But we also missed our school community and many things about the classroom experience. With AHB, we have found the best of both worlds. Our daughter gets to go into the classroom where teachers present learning in a way that is collaborative with other classmates, experiential and fosters a love of learning first and foremost. She has an amazing community of friends and we have found a wonderful new parent community. Academic rigor and social/emotional development are both deeply valued. At the same time, with the shortened hours and schedule, she gets to learn outside of the classroom in ways we would not make time for if we didn`t have that extra Thursday or Friday at home. For example, the Alpha class is studying the United States and was learning about State capitals. What is capital? Why do we have them? What goes on inside those domed buildings? The kids were learning about these questions in the classroom but there was a time in our week to extend the learning. Living in Austin, we used some of our home education time to visit the Austin Capitol building, walk around the State Senate chambers and spark lots more conversation that helped my first grader better conceptualize this topic. This sort of thing is not required at AHB, but we have found we really love to do it! We are so happy to be at this school that melds together the best of classroom and home education.

I love this school so much! It's a great place to learn and have at the same time! After 9 years I can still say that I have never had a boring day at school. We're always learning new things and there's never nothing to do. The teachers are very helpful, fun, and always know how to help. I will miss it greatly but it was the best school I've ever been to (even if it's the only one)!

AHB is an amazing learning community. For us it has been the perfect mix of academic rigor (challenging each students at their appropriate level) and a warm social-emotional learning environment. The open-ended projects and hands-on learning keep my kids engaged and will serve them well in life after school. Between my two children, over the past 5 years we've experienced life at almost every level of this K-8 school and have found great teachers and learning at every step.

I love it here because my kids are so happy to come to school......even after 4 years, and because the community and the teachers are so warm and welcoming. My kids are working at or above grade levels compared to more traditional schools even though they are at school fewer hours and learning in a very different way, mostly through projects and hands on experience.
