In September 2014, Beacon Academy will open its doors to its first 9th and 10th grade classes, offering a bold new model of secondary education.
The program merges Montessori principles with independent school best practices and culminates with the IB Diploma Program, an interdisciplinary curriculum that emphasizes self-directed learning, strong writing skills, and an international mindset.
Beacon’s curriculum embodies the principle of “learning by doing” by affording students abundant opportunities for hands-on investigation, student-centered discussions, experimentation, critical thinking and fieldwork.
Moving beyond the traditional conception of a “classroom,” students at Beacon Academy will engage in fieldwork and apprenticeships with experts with whom they can problem-solve, collaborate, and contribute to ongoing projects of far-reaching significance.
Beacon is a community school in the strongest sense of the word with Evanston and greater Chicago serving as our extended campus.

School Notes:

  • Mission and Vision

Beacon Academy offers an innovative and challenging education based on Montessori principles that places a priority on experiential learning, entrepreneurial thinking, and in-depth interdisciplinary studies. Beacon students will master the skills, knowledge, and habits of mind necessary to meaningfully contribute to a complex and diverse world with compassion and confidence. Beacon Academy is committed to academic excellence. In addition to foundational and elective coursework, Beacon Academy will offer the rigorous and well-regarded International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program in the 11th and 12th grades. The IB Program and Montessori share a global perspective with a social focus and encourage students to think critically while synthesizing knowledge from multiple disciplines.

    Montessori and International Baccalaureate (IB)

Beacon Academy’s innovative integration of Montessori and International Baccalaureate (IB) is designed to prepare its students with the skills they will need to thrive in an ever-changing global world. Fundamentally, the goals of Montessori and IB are the same: the intellectual, ethical, creative, physical, and emotional development of each student. At its core, IB provides a rigorous, well-rounded, integrated academic program that prepares students for success in higher education and their journeys beyond. The IB Program is anchored within the traditional areas of education (languages, social sciences, math, sciences, and arts) while further emphasizing the importance of philosophical reflection, public service, and individual initiative. This type of holistic approach encourages and enables each student to become a knowledgeable, confident, inquisitive, and compassionate young adult who recognizes the importance of being an active and responsible citizen.

    Beyond the Classroom: Institutional Partnerships

Piven Theatre (, a nationally recognized theatre workshop, will partner with Beacon in delivering its drama program.

Evanston Art Center (, one of the finest art schools in Chicago, will help to provide instruction and curriculum in Beacon’s visual arts program.

The Musical Offering (, a top-notch music school in Evanston, will support our music curriculum and programming.

Northwestern’s Office of STEM Education Partnerships ( will augment Beacon’s math, science, and technology program.

The Center for Talent Development ( will provide students with access to dozens of challenging and specialized courses so they can actively pursue studies of personal interest at advanced levels.

Beacon is within walking distance of the Evanston Public Library (, one of the best libraries in Chicagoland. Our students will have access to their significant database collection, almost 500,000 books, and first-rate staff.
