The Independence School, an independent, co-educational day school for ages 3 through grade eight, was founded in 1978 by parents seeking a challenging education, strong in the academic subjects, arts, foreign languages, and athletics. Today, the school occupies a 91-acre campus in Newark, Delaware and features a 900-seat auditorium, library/media center, acoustically designed music rooms, science laboratories, a full size gymnasium, community meeting spaces, art rooms and gallery. School Notes:
- The Independence School believes that educational excellence results when there exist in combination outstanding teachers, moderate class sizes,a pleasant yet disciplined classroom environment,and a traditional, sequential arts-and-sciences curriculum taught in a structured manner. A vital element in the success of an Independence education is a strong parent-school partnership fostered by extensive communication.
- Achievement grouping permits students to learn at the appropriate pace.
- Foreign language study begins in grade one.
- The performing arts are a strong part of our curriculum. Strings begin in grade three; lessons for band instruments begin in grade four. Chorus and choir begin in Early Childhood. Drama club presents annual productions in 900 seat auditorium.
- Intramural and interscholastic athletics include cross country, track, soccer, lacrosse, field hockey, tennis, wrestling, basketball,volleyball and baseball.
