Lokahi Montessori School
School Notes Overview:
Lokahi Montessori School, like all Montessori Schools, has mixed age groupings. This allows students to work at their own pace through the curriculum, advancing in areas of strengths and receiving additional practice in weaker areas. Lokahi has chosen to specialize in the teaching of children with unique learning styles, including those children who are gifted and/or talented. The Montessori method is uniquely designed to provide the type of self-paced, individualized, highly enriched curriculum that helps to prevent boredom, maintains the motivation to learn, and increases independence as a learner. The ungraded curriculum allows some children to move ahead as far and as fast as they are able, while it allows others the extra time needed to practice and master difficult tasks before moving ahead. Lokahi uses the Montessori method to provide thematically-based, multi-sensory, hands-on learning which involves input through all five senses. Children choose from pre-selected activities which allows learning to more closely match brain development. Compared to other preschool programs, Lokahi would be considered quite "academic". Traditional preschool toys are replaced by Montessori approved academic learning materials, designed to teach reading, writing, spelling, math, geography, and science, as well as practical life skills, all at a developmental level appropriate for preschoolers. The classrooms are very well equipped with approved Montessori materials. There is always something for everyone to do and children are continually, and happily, engaged in active learning....
