A recent WRAP report (Film reprocessing technologies and collection schemes - published July 2012) confirms the findings of our own year-long study by stating: "there is currently no large-scale collection scheme for household film in the UK " and "Household film is generally not recycled. Some is removed by manual picking lines, but the vast majority is sent to landfill or energy from waste facilities." So we're talking about all that thin plastic that comes wrapped around much of our supermarket produce and which, according to that same report, amounts to 1.2 million tonnes per annum. As we probably all know, plastic is made from oil ... a limited resource which has taken millions of years to produce. It is also guesstimated that it takes anywhere between 500 and 1000+ years to naturally decompose. Even then we don't know for sure if it will ever completely break down into harmless elements.
