When he's not riding his own bike he's restoring them and giving them away. It should be no surprise that he's popular with the kids in the community. He loves riding his bike, and he can be seen regularly pedaling his way thru his Rogers Park neighborhood. But that's not the reason Bill McGraw is known as the bike guy. For the past 10 years, he's been gathering up broken bikes which he transports to his basement work shop where he makes them ridable again. Then he gives them away. "I want to give something back. I see hundreds and hundreds of children who don't have bikes," McGraw said. Using his own funds for parts, McGraw provides what ever repairs are needed then looks for a youngster who needs a bike. Since the effort began, he has donated bikes to social service agencies and churches located in every part of the city and as far away as Harvey. At Lubavitch Mesivta of Chicago, students there are especially appreciative of McGraw's donation. "They need bikes to go back to where they are staying and back and forth. It's very convenient for them. It's great for them to have a bike when they're right nearby," said Shmuel Perlstein, student.
