A dozen school teams from Lake and Porter counties competed in the 2009 Indiana Academic Spell Bowl Saturday at Purdue University in West Lafayette. In the realm of academics or the field of athletics, longtime educator the Rev. John Ward was an inspiration to the many students he taught. Rev. Ward, a math teacher for more than 20 years and assistant track and field coach at Catholic Central High School, died Thursday of cardiac arrest at Providence Park Hospital in Novi. He was 68.
