The Gateway School of New York is an ungraded elementary school dedicated to helping children with learning disabilities develop the academic skills, learning strategies, social competence and self-confidence necessary to succeed.
Our students, ages 5-14, learn in a nurturing educational environment, which empowers them to overcome early developmental hurdles, and allows their talents to flourish.
At Gateway, we seek to provide an optimal learning environment for children who have great potential but who struggle with the significant difference between their strong abilities and their confounding difficulties in some aspects of life and learning.
We offer a developmental program designed to promote the growth of the whole child.
Our goals are to extend our students’ considerable strengths, to address their areas of weakness, and to encourage them to pursue their passions.
Our curriculum includes the study of traditional academic disciplines, such as language arts, mathematics, technology, visual and performing arts, social studies, and science.
Our instruction, however, moves beyond the content of these subjects to the foundational skills that allow children to meet with success in academics as well as other areas of their lives.
Teachers and specialists work as a team to promote development in the areas of language, perception, social skills, sensory-motor functioning, and cognition.
Through individualized work in collaborative groups, our students learn to become problem solvers, able to assess and address difficulties that arise in both academic and social situations.
