Woodland Hall Academy accepts bright students who have dyslexia, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorders, Aspergers, and related language disorders.
These students have language and perceptual difficulties.
Their abilities and academic skills in relation to their potential are generally below what would be expected.
These students have experienced difficulty in regular classrooms because their reading, comprehension, writing, spelling or mathematics skills are below grade level or beneath their expected performance.
Often they have attention concentration deficits, organizational difficulties and/or a poor self-concept.
Woodland Hall Academy is one of the few schools in the country who work with children with ADHD without the use of medication.
Children with ADHD are taught how to focus, maintain organization, and develop self-control through positive reinforcement and logical consequences.
Woodland Hall Academy is accredited by The National Private Schools Accreditation Alliance and is a member of the Florida Association of Special Education Facilities as well as a member of the Coalition of McKay Scholarship Schools.
The goal of Woodland Hall Academy is to remediate the child within a reasonable time period and help the child develop the appropriate skills needed to return to regular academic classrooms and to function adequately within his intelligence range without stress or undue frustration.
Generally, a minimum of three or four years is required.

- Students attending Woodland Hall Academy rediscover the joys of learning because their unique learning differences caused by dyslexia, ADHD, Aspergers or related communication disorders are addressed with teaching methods that match the way the student learns.
- Confidence and self-esteem can only be built through success. One of the major concerns parents relate to administrators as they are exploring whether to enroll their child in WHA are the child’s weak or poor confidence and self-esteem. “My child doesn’t feel that he can do anything right. I’m afraid he is giving up.” is often a comment that is made. Because students are placed in classes appropriate to their skills levels, and they begin to learn material they previously had not learned, they begin to be successful. Teachers create a safe environment for learning. When a child makes a mistake, the teacher immediately gives the child the correct answer and the child repeats it back. Gone is the response, “We have been studying this for a week. You should know it. Johnny, tell Jill what the answer is!” Teachers support the student’s learning by much practice and rehearsal of information until it is independent. Respect, courtesy and encouragement are modeled by teachers and practiced by students. “Good job” is not just heard from the teachers, but from the students to each other. One of our sixth graders exclaimed one day, “I love school. You know, nobody laughs at me because I make mistakes when I read!” (She’s now a graduate student in Occupational Therapy.) Teachers try to “catch” students doing something right. Parents are often called to be told what their child is doing correctly so that a positive relationship is developed between school, parent, and child.
- Many times children who are poor readers are placed in remedial classes where the content of the information is simplified and lower than their actual intellectual ability. They become educationally deficit because they are not learning the same information as other students. Conversely, they may be in grade level classes where they are expected to read materials that they can not even though they can understand the content. They often struggle and give up because they can not make it through the reading. Content classes such as Science or History at WHA are designed so that the students’ weaknesses in reading or writing may be compensated by the information being presented in a variety of fashions. Teacher present information through use of graphic organizers which have extracted the important information from the text and placed it in a mode the students can understand and learn. Students participate in hands-on activities which bring the content alive. Use of Internet resources and other resources are brought as teaching tools.
