Eagle Crest Academy is an independent non-profit day school for students in grades 7-12 with dyslexia, located in Anchorage, Alaska.
The Academy is committed to providing a supportive educational environment where students learn how to become self-directed learners who strive for academic excellence.
To this end, specially trained staff utilize small class size and a multi-sensory, concept-oriented, experiential approach in all instructional areas.
The school has two equally important goals: The first, graduate students with skills that enable them to succeed at the college of their choice.
The second, nurture character traits which lead to strong interpersonal relationships, success in the world of work, and a commitment to serving the community.
Eagle Crest is recognized by the State of Alaska, and credits are transferable to other schools.
We believe that dyslexia is a significant obstacle to classroom performance, not an insurmountable barrier.
Consequently, we do not teach students ways to get around their dyslexia, or excuse them from the demands of learning.
Instead, we teach students to optimize their strengths, and deal realistically with their limitations, so they can perform successfully in any educational environment.
We view students with dyslexia as exciting individuals who generally set high standards for themselves both in the area of character development and academics.
We applaud students' desire to do and be their best, and provide numerous opportunities for them to do so.
As part of requiring the best of students, we support the value and dignity of individual spiritual needs and beliefs.
Eagle Crest students are those with average to above-average intelligence, who have been able to maintain their goals and dreams despite discouraging school experiences.
Their dyslexia has not caused them to give up on themselves.
To the contrary, they continue to believe in their ability to learn and achieve.
These individuals have the courage to commit to a rigorous academic program and the personal integrity to demand their best effort.
