  • Ability KC's Mary Shaw Branton Therapeutic Preschool is nationally accredited to support children with and without disabilities to reach their educational, developmental and emotional goals. The therapeutic preschool program is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and operates as a Head Start and Early Head Start direct service provider. Therapists join the classroom teams to provide a holistic individualized experience for each child on their path to reaching their greatest potential.

Therapeutic Preschool & Specialty Services
  • Mary Shaw Branton Therapeutic Preschool: The Mary Shaw Branton Therapeutic Preschool provides an inclusive environment for children with disabilities and typically developing peer models. Ability KC`s classrooms maintain a one to four teacher student ratio to meet the level of support needed for each child.Ability KC teachers use standardized assessments and an approved curriculum to ensure kindergarten readiness. In addition, therapists join the classroom teams to provide a holistic experience specific to each child`s goals.
  • Outpatient Therapy: The outpatient therapy clinic at Ability KC`s therapeutic preschool uses a medical model to evaluate and treat children. These therapy services provide the perfect adjunct to school or home-based therapy sessions. Ability KC therapists will work with families to set up a plan for each child that will complement and reinforce their current therapeutic intervention for gross motor skills, fine motor skills, sensory regulation and speech and language development. Ability KC specialty services support theindividualized goals of the children participating in the outpatient therapy clinic through Assistive Technology, Aquatic Therapy, Sensory Feeding and many more also support the individualized goals of the children participating in the outpatient therapy clinic. The outpatient therapy clinic gives families an opportunity to receive critical physical, occupational and speech therapies even if their child has not met school or home-based eligibility criteria.
  • Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA): ABA services at Ability KC allow children with Autism, challenging behaviors or developmental delays to learn socially appropriate behaviors with an abundance of positivereinforcement. The therapy teams at Ability KC strategically structure each child`s day for planned and naturally occurring opportunities to acquire and practice new skills.
  • Aquatic Therapy: Aquatic therapy helps improve balance, circulation, core stability, endurance, flexibility, motor planning, muscular tone, posture and strength. Exercises may be modified for all ability levels from slow and gentleto dynamic in movement.Ability KC also offers Adaptive Swim Sessions for children ages 3-6 and ages 6-10. Each session is designed for children with a variety of special needs.
  • Assistive Technology: Assistive Technology servicesat Ability KC match individualsthe best technology that meetstheir needs to reach their goals of communication and online and computer access. Children with disabilities and their families work with an experienced team to identify, acquire and learn how touse assistive technology tools to reach their greatest abilities. 

History
Ability KC is built on a strong founding legacy that continues to inspire the work done each day for children, adults and families with disabilities.In 1947, Mary Shaw Branton, Jeanette Luhnow and Jane Dick founded the therapeutic preschool for childrenwith special needs. At the same time, Vivian Shepherd worked to provide outpatient medical rehabilitation and employment services for veterans returning home from World War II. Seventy years andthousands of successes later those founding organizations came together as one organization, Ability KC. Today, Ability KC is uniquely positioned to provide a continuum of care for all of life`s milestones.
