  • Holy Trinity Elementary School
  • Kindergarten Program- Our kindergarten program is offered through two morning classes from 8:15 am – 12:00 noon. After school Kindergarten Day Care is provided from 12:00 noon through 3:00 p.m. In addition, After School Care is available from 3:00 p.m. through 6:00 p.m. Each program has a separate cost. Our curriculum is standard based which is fully integrated and taught using various methodologies. Our kindergarten students are introduced to the wonderful world God gave us and how we can take care of it. Students learn about many ways we show our love to God, for our families, and for each other. Math subjects include numeration, beginning geometry, addition, subtraction and problem solving strategies. Time, money, and measurement concepts are also introduced. Comprehension and phonics skills are covered in our reading program as well as listening and speaking skills. The Writing Starz computer program is used to enhance phonics and writing instruction. Students also participate in regular physical education and music enrichment programs. Special lessons on life and physical science are taught along with ongoing lessons on the weather and the seasons. Children enjoy weekly art projects and participate in Art-to-Grow-On.
  • First Grade- The first grade educational experience is fun and interactive while accommodating all learning styles: visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. Content areas presented through the use of integrated thematic instruction stress problem solving and critical thinking. The Language Arts Program emphasizes the writing process through technology using the Writing Starz Lab. Computer Program. Daily reading logs are monitored to foster and encourage every day reading. Math and science incorporate the use of manipulatives and tactile lessons to meet our Student Learning Objectives. Students also have an opportunity to participate in a Christmas Play, “The Birth of Christ” and raise funds through the Annual Pet Show. All monies raised go towards food for the poor. All events are done in partnership with our families to encourage a sense of community and foster our Catholic Christian ideals. By cultivating the academic, emotional and spiritual well-being of the child, we prepare students to journey through this critical stage of development well rounded and prepared for future grades.
  • Second Grade- Second grade is a year in which the children develop a closer, more personal relationship with God. In preparing to celebrate their First Reconciliation and First Communion, second graders grow to understand the true meaning of forgiveness and learn that the Eucharist is truly the Body of the Christ The social studies curriculum allows the children to appreciate family customs, ancestors, and their own uniqueness. To show their appreciation for their grandparents’ contributions to their families, an official Grandparents’ Day is proclaimed. The students sing songs, recite poems, break bread, and pray a decade of the Rosary with their grandparents. In math, students learn various strategies to solve problems. Students are also introduced to key concepts such as regrouping and multiplication. They receive an ample amount of opportunities to demonstrate the ability to problem solve and think critically. Students’ reading skills are strengthened through activities which incorporate the auditory, visual and kinesthetic learning styles. Our language arts program strengthens reading comprehension and builds vocabulary. Students progress through stages of the writing process (e.g., prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, successive versions). It is a year in which second graders grown socially, academically, and spiritually!
  • Third Grade- Third grade introduces students to cursive and time tables in addition to the continued emphasis on reading, writing and math skills. In third grade religion, students are introduced to the life of Jesus Christ through skits about His healings and miracles and continue to grow in their prayer and spiritual life, with a strong emphasis on Social Justice. Students also experience a Seder Meal for Passover just as Jesus did as a boy. The scientific method is taught in the science program through the use of experiments and hands on learning activities. Social studies include an examination of the local community’s past and present. Children take field trips to historical San Pedro sites. Our integrated learning approach also includes a production of Christmas traditions around the world. Students bring in samples of food, clothing, and music to share the customs of other countries.
  • Fourth Grade- The 4th Grade curriculum concentrates on the core subject areas of social studies, science, math, language arts, and religion. Social Studies cover the history of California from the Spanish exploration to the state’s current economy. Physical and Life sciences are introduced. This includes rocks and minerals, electricity and magnetism, and ecosystems and food chains. Participatory learning is emphasized through hands-on investigations and experimentations. Problem solving and critical thinking skills are emphasized in our math curriculum. Work in standard algorithms, introduction to fractions, decimals, and geometry are taught. Reading comprehension combined with spelling and grammar is developed through the use of fiction and nonfiction literature. The 4th grade writing program includes skill development in expository, narrative, descriptive, and persuasive styles. Students are taught using a variety of methods include hands-on projects, collaboration with fellow students, role-playing, field trips, computer research, and special history days. The methods contribute to a rich academic experience in the 4th grade.
  • Fifth Grade- Fifth grade continues to build upon the previous year’s core subject areas taught, while preparing students for Middle School. In religion, students go in depth about the seven sacraments. This study is supplemented with the creation of a school-wide mass and a reliving of the Stations of the Cross. For language arts and reading, students read core literature books and basic readers. In the area of Language Arts and Reading, students are expected to read core literature books along with different genres of literature. Students will explore the different elements of a story in depth through various assignments. Vocabulary, spelling, and skills-in-context are integrated into each story. Literacy analysis are expected of each student. The 5th grade writing program continues the skill development for alternative writing styles learned in 4th grade. The math curriculum introduces more difficult problems to expand upon their skills in addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, decimals, and fractions. Social Studies cover the states and state capitals of the United States. Students learn about the important people, documents, and events that helped to create the nation we live in. Students do a living history performance of famous people to tie in their Social Studies curriculum. The science curriculum continues to develop their knowledge in the life, earth, and physical sciences through hands-on learning. Computer Technology The kindergarten and first grade students participate in the Writing Starz program where they go to the PC lab for an hour each day. The second and third grade students use the PC lab to do language arts activities and math exercises. Beginning in fourth grade the students go to the Mac lab where they are taught core computer application skills. Each student is assigned a computer. Each week the classroom teachers collaborate with the technology teacher to prepare standards based lessons that integrate technology into the curriculum.
  • Middle School Language Arts- Students follow a comprehensive course of studies in language arts. English, reading, drama, and computer teachers collaborate to teach language arts. Students read from various genres. A Shakespeare play is read and seen on stage in 7th and 8th grade. The Accelerated Reader program is used in the 7th grade to encourage independent reading practice and the acquisition of reading skills. The 8th grade will be doing Literature circles In the 6th Grade, students study character analysis and learn the methods of writing effective research papers. Students develop knowledge of literary concepts, techniques, and analysis. Proficiency in reading strategies, comprehension skills, and critical and creative thinking are also enhanced. Students work towards the mastery of the conventions of grammar and build vocabulary and spelling skills through reading and a core spelling/vocabulary list. Catholic philosophy is frequently applied in analyzing literature and assessing the behavior of characters. Math- The math curriculum follows the California standards. Prentice Hall Mathematics with PH Success Net presents a most challenging curriculum. In both 7th and 8th grade, we have academic grouping, where the 7th graders follow either the PH course 2 or the course 3 curriculum, studying a combination of Pre-Algebra, fundamental geometry, and basic math skills. At the 8th grade level, students follow either PH course 3 or Algebra I coursework. The curriculum involves projects and technology, interactive group work, in addition to traditional whole-class instruction. The teacher is available 3 days a week afterschool to assist students. Computer Technology- Middle School students use the Mac Lab in two ways. Using the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) National Educational Technology Standards for Students (NETS), students are taught core computer application skills to provide a foundation for using technology. Middle School students study technology in our society, with an emphasis on social, ethical, and human issues. They learn to use technology productivity tools such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Database, and PowerPoint. They design and publish documents with Adobe InDesign. Students use other technology, e.g. digital cameras, i-Movies, i-Photo, and the Internet to research, develop, and present assignments. Holy Trinity School subscribes to two excellent Internet sources, i.e. Catholic Telemedia Network and Camp Internet, which provide standards based materials. In Middle School, the computer lab is an extension of the classroom. Teachers collaborate to plan cross-curricular lessons and projects. These projects meet the standards of several curricula and are taught in the computer lab. Music- In the Middle School, students continue to build upon their musical knowledge in focused areas. In 6th Grade, the students learn to play the recorder and have opportunities to play alone, in small groups and as a class. Their music reading skills are honed and their sense of style and interpretation are developed. In 7th Grade, the students take an historical trip as they study music through the ages. We begin with music in the Middle Ages and travel through the Renaissance, Baroque, Classical and Romantic Eras right into the Twenty-First Century. As a final project, the students work in small groups to write, direct, produce and perform in a filmed presentation about a great composer from one of the above eras. Finally, in 8th Grade, students re-visit concepts and practices taken from the many lessons they learned throughout their years at Holy Trinity. As they sing through some of their favorite songs from the textbooks, we study the styles forms, history and multi-cultural aspects of each piece. Through these analyses, students will become more familiar with composition, both musical and lyrical. They will do creative writing exercises to help them develop ideas for their original songs which will be shared with the class.
  • Extra-Curricular Activities Academic Decathlon- Sponsored by the Department of Catholic Schools, the Academic Junior High Decathlon is held annually in the spring for students from all over the Diocese. Students compete by taking tests in math, science, literature, English, current events, history, fine arts, and Catholic doctrine. Team events include the logic quiz and super quiz. Weekly activities include team and individual preparation. Altar Servers- This program is open to boys and girls in the fifth through eighth grades and is a valuable service to the parish. Athletics- Holy Trinity’s athletic program develops a student’s physical, mental, and social skills through team play. Good sportsmanship is the foundation to develop a well-rounded student. Academic standards are established which students must meet to participate in any support. Boys- Football(Co-ed), Basketball, Volleyball (7th/8th only), Soccer (7th/8th only), Baseball (7th/8th only), Hockey (7th/8th only), Track (4th – 8th), Girls- Basketball, Volleyball, Soccer (7th/8th only), Softball (7th/8th only), Track (4th – 8th), Cheerleaders- The cheerleading squad cheers at various sporting events, assemblies, and other school-wide functions. Open to 7th and 8th grade girls, cheerleaders must have parental permission to try-out and raise funds for uniforms. CJSF- Holy Trinity School is a member of Chapter 126J of the California Junior Scholarship Federation. This association established by the State of California, gives recognition for high academic achievement and service. Drama- This program, in its seventh year has produced seventeen productions. The productions range from core literature re-enactments to musicals. Middle school students handle every aspect of the musical including fund-raising and stage crew. Newspaper- Charger Chatter is published monthly by our Middle School students. Students in TAG groups write and edit timely articles. The editors layout and publish the paper. Finally the paper is distributed to all students in grades kindergarten through eighth. Science Club- Students in grades first through fifth grade are eligible to participate in this program designed to increase science literacy. Students learn about scientific principles while launching rockets, creating slime, making basketball launchers, and participating in other hands-on activities. Scouting- Holy Trinity sponsors a range of scouting programs for boys and girls. The troops include kindergarten through 8th grade. The members then have the option to continue in scouting through high school. Student Council- Student Council promotes good citizenship, scholarship, school spirit, practical democracy, and school welfare. Students interested in a leadership position campaign and participate in a two-tier election. Talented and Gifted Program (TAG)- Our TAG program provides enrichment for our gifted students in the Middle School. Students participate in 6 4-week rotations in areas that include newspaper, etiquette, public speaking, reader’s theater, cribbage math tournament, first aid, and drama. Decathlon teams use this time to practice and study their chosen areas. Yearbook- Our yearbook team works throughout the year to produce a 150 page book. Eighth grade students interview for nine editorial positions and are responsible for selling advertisements, accounting, photography, layout, and marketing. The final product is published by Jostens.
