I am truly not a current parent. My sons attended St. James and now my grandchildren attend St. James School. I have volunteered many hours at the school. I am a retired Madison Public School teacher. My admiration and respect for the community of St. James extends first to the teachers who are an incredibly dedicated community of skilled teachers and nurturers. The parents are active in volunteering and supportive without being micro-managers. The parents value the work of the school community and communicate their support in action by supporting both activities and field trips in the academics and the extra-curricular activities. And, the students are hardworking and conscientious young people who reflect the efforts of their parents and staff to be kind and generous in their service to others. The After School program is invaluable for working parents. The lunch program is run by volunteers and enables those students who are still hungry after the initial service to often get seconds. St. James is a good school with strong academics and kind and generous heart. It has been a great experience for me to be a part of the school through volunteering.

I have two children that attend this school. I love it! I am able to check in at the office and go the class rooms at almost anytime. Any time that I have had a question or concern, I can go directly to the teachers, and I have found the teachers and staff are very responsive. There are computer labs and smart boards and all the other modern tools there. The things I love best is that the school is smaller, the kids get great attention that is full of love and there is a very strong sense of community within the school. The school holds the parents accountable as well, you as a parent are expected to be involved in the school occasionally, help on playground, etc.. I live in Madison school district and don't consider that a desirable option. I would rather spend my money on my kids education then other things. I would recommend this school to everyone, if I didn't think it was the best I certainly would not send my own children there. Hope this helps.

I am a parent and an alumni of St. James. I have both my kids enrolled at St. James and they will continue through 8th grade. I really love the small town feel in the middle of downtown Madison. St James is a middle class school that is ethnically and religiously diverse -- just like Madison, which is something that you can't find in any other parochial school in Madison.

What is a lab school? It's a K-12 school or school with some variation of those grades which is operated by a university or college.
Helicopter, velcro and snowplow parents can't stand the thought of their children having difficulty with anything. Over-protective parents come in several flavors. More here.
