Thanks to the efforts of students at the Immaculate Conception School in Jamaica Estates, the community has a new state historical marker. The sign was unveiled Friday at Wexford Terrace and the Midlands Mall. State Sen. Frank Padavan, center, provided the $2,000 in funding for the designation.

When they found out that a statue of their hero, Jacob Riis, had been missing for more than 40 years from the Far Rockaway park where it was first displayed in 1940, they decided to do something about it.
