The vision of North Tonawanda Catholic School is to provide a strong educational foundation of knowledge and understanding for all of our students, intellectually, morally and physically, within a Christian atmosphere. The commitment from our faculty creates in each student a desire to develop to his or her fullest potential in becoming an outstanding citizen of the 21st century. North Tonawanda Catholic School is an educational institution that has as its aim the cultivation of basic Catholic educational philosophy in an atmosphere of growth--intellectual, moral, physical, and emotional. This philosophy is structured on the following four basic principles: intellectual growth stimulated by a professional faculty, updated textbooks and methodology, and an extensive library; moral growth developed primarily by example and directed by a program of religious education and moral values encouraged by each teacher not only through formal education, but throughout each school day; emotional growth stimulated by healthy social interaction with fellow students and relationships of respect with the administration and faculty; and physical growth enhanced by an active participation in a curriculum-driven physical education program and the availability of a variety of sports and sport-related activities as well as numerous opportunities for healthy physical development. ...

Mrs. Sommer, 58, of Matawan, died Sept. 25, 2009, at Bayshore Community Hospital, Holmdel. She had resided in North Tonawanda, N.Y., before relocating to Matawan in 2001. Mrs. Sommer was a teacher for 27 years for the Greater Johnstown School District; St. Mary's School, Swormville, N.Y; North Tonawanda Catholic School; and St. Benedict's, Holmdel, retiring in 2003. - Gift from local parish shines in Nicaragua (The Buffalo News)
