Grades K-5 are housed in the main building while PK students have their own dedicated facility, newly expanded and designed specifically to meet our youngest students' needs.
The Junior School offers small class sizes and two sections per grade which allows for close student to teacher interaction. The environment at Shady Side Academy Junior School allows teachers to differentiate instruction, meeting children where they are and taking them forward.
Classroom technology includes a computer lab, Idea Lab, iPads and SMART Boards in every classroom, and a 1-to-1 iPad program in 5th grade. A newly renovated suite of science labs includes early (K-2) and upper (3-5) elementary labs, ecosystem lab, idea lab, and robotics and maker space.
The arts are an important element of the Shady Side Academy Junior School experience. Students begin the instrumental program in second grade; Kodaly method and Orff approach are used for music instruction. Students perform for parents, grandparents and friends several times a year.
Interdisciplinary learning helps raise students' awareness of the meaningful connections that exist among the academic disciplines. Each year in fourth grade, the Greek gods and goddesses come to life at the annual Fourth Grade Greek Museum, an interdisciplinary project that integrates literature, writing, history, costume design and public speaking.
Shady Side Academy uses the Math in Focus Singapore Math curriculum in grades K-7. This innovative approach to teaching math focuses on problem solving, deep understanding and the use of model drawing to drive the acquisition and application of mathematical skills. It covers the same content as traditional mathematics programs, but in a way that emphasizes understanding and flexible thinking.
All students at the Junior School are published writers through the Writing Workshop curriculum. Students work on collecting ideas in a writer?'s notebook, drafting stories, revising those stories, editing drafts and finally publishing a piece. With an hour of writing time every day, our young authors have a chance to write narrative, informational and opinion pieces throughout the year.
The school day runs from 8:15 a.m. to 3:05 p.m. The After-School Explorers program runs until 6 p.m. daily and offers enrichment classes, private music lessons, study and play time. Free before-school care is also offered, and students can be dropped off as early as 7:30 a.m.
Junior School students at Shady Side Academy learn to use the library as both a resource and a study center. Whether it is learning to conduct research, borrowing and reading books, or working on projects using laptops, this space helps students to develop the skills to become independent learners.
Shady Side Academy's Guiding Principles of honesty, kindness, respect, responsibility and safety are the foundation of our community. At the Junior School this is called living
