Computers in Private School
Published May 30, 2008
Many schools require you to purchase a laptop as part of their supplies or book fees. What's going on here? Can't I just go online and buy the laptop I want? The answer is generally "No!"
That's because schools try to standardize the kind of laptop used. It makes support and configuration issues much, much easier. For example, here's what Kent School has to say about the issue:
"The basics of the technology program: Kent includes the necessary academic computing tool in the enrollment contract in order to guarantee a computer up to the job, the right software pre-configured to work, proper protection from viruses and access to our best resources for quick repair and minimum downtime. We entirely support these computers. There is nothing else you need to do. You may upgrade the computer through the Technology Department."
Some schools follow Hotchkiss' approach to student computers. Both desktops and laptops are allowed. PC and MAC platforms are permitted. You can bring your own or buy it at school.
Certain kinds of private schools tend to downplay the significance of computers in education. The Waldorf or Steiner schools, for example, as well as the classical Christian schools focus on traditional core subjects and minimize the importance of technology in the classroom. That may seem a bit out of step with the times, but that is the essence of a private school. It can follow its own teaching methods and curriculum. If you don't agree with these, you don't need to send your child to that school. It's that simple!
