The Cathedral School

319 E 74th Street, New York, NY, 10021-0100
Founded in 1949, The Cathedral School provides a warm, nurturing and family atmosphere to 132 day students in Nursery - Grade 8.  With a 10:1 student-teacher ratio, an international student body and placement of graduates in the city’s best high schools, The Cathedral School continues its legacy of educating children in The Classics.  Our mission statement of “excellence through the classics” has become a central part of our curriculum as all of our students are encouraged and given the tools with which to integrate The Classics in their education. The curriculum includes Ancient Greek (Grades 7 - 8) and Mythology (Kindergarten - Grade 4). The Cathedral School has also become a charter member of the National Junior Classical League and our students routinely win highest honors in the League’s annual ETC (Excellence Through Classics) examination. Our participation has produced exceptional results, also described further on our website. Apart from our mission of “Education through Classics”, The Cathedral School seeks to provide a well-rounded education to students. In addition to the standard core classes of Math, English, History, Social Studies and Science, The Cathedral School offers Chess, French, Computer Science, Physical Education, Art and Music in its daily curriculum.  Movement and Exercise and Music Appreciation are taught to Early Childhood students. Our recent transition to the internationally successful Singapore Math Program for Grades K – 6 is yielding positive results.  The After-School Center, which runs until 5:45pm, offers a variety of activities including sports, karate, music, art, creative writing, creative cooking, hands-on science, chess, drama, filmmaking 101, and Greek language and culture. A recent major grant from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation has made it possible for us to create a new Learning Center, increase our Smartboard™ technology to be available in every classroom, as well as to enhance a number of other academic initiatives such as faculty development and scholarship funding. This generous grant, matched by other donors, and the resulting projects undertaken are the latest examples of our will to constantly improve both our physical plant and the education we offer your children.

School Notes:

  • The Cathedral School's curriculum includes Early Childhood, Lower school (grades K -4) and Upper School (grades 5 - 8). Early Childhood (grades N and Pre-K) focuses on child development by encouraging students to reach their full potential socially, emotionally and intellectually. Students are further encouraged to learn, to grow and be happy through a developmental approach which includes physical, social, language and cognitive development. The Lower and Upper School Curriculum is designed to promote literacy, develop math skills, enhance students' understanding of the world around them, cultivate work habits and foster citizenship. The entire curriculum, nursery through grade eight, is articulated through standards that define the important knowledge, skills and understandings that we believe all students must acquire in order to become fully functioning, well-educated citizens. Our skilled and dedicated teachers are committed to helping all children reach their own individual best in every subject area.

Here are a dozen or so girls' schools' public thoughts about themselves and their missions.

Make Summer a Special Time! Make Summer a Special Time!
If you have children in private school, then you are most likely looking at three months, perhaps even longer, which you must fill with activities of one kind or another during the long summer break.

Are You Liable? Are You Liable?
Is your DEL key about to get gaveled? It doesn't matter whether you teach in a public or private school setting. You expose yourself to legal risks every single day on the job.
