School Notes:

  • Veritas- At Lawrence Woodmere Academy, we do more than just state our commitment to academic excellence. We demonstrate it every day by challenging our students in a supportive academic environment while nurturing their personal talents and abilities. Our goal in that process is to help students develop the critical thinking skills they will need in their pursuit of knowledge and truth. In a class of 15, there is no hiding in the background. The dedication of our faculty to ongoing professional development enables our academic program to be innovative, challenging, and responsive to different learning styles. Our students are actively engaged in the pursuit of academic excellence, and our most important priority is the commitment of our faculty to ensuring their success. Our students grow and thrive in a participant-based learning environment where academic curiosity is fostered through collective discovery. We balance independence and structure through activities and experiences that engage not only their intellectual curiosity, but also their physical, social, and emotional selves. We have a balanced imperative to develop both strength of character and outstanding scholarship in all of our students. At Lawrence Woodmere Academy, arts and athletics not only teach teamwork, leadership, and respect, but are also essential elements in the development of character.
  • Integritas- We have the resources to match opportunity with student talent and interest, so that all our students can find their true voice, expressed in a safe and secure environment. Our Arts and Athletics programs are inclusive, encouraging participation regardless of experience or ability level. Students can engage in creative self-expression whether learning to feel comfortable on the stage or confidently displaying a painting in the front hall. Athletic leadership can be achieved whether a student athlete has been competing in a sport for many years, or if a student has decided to try a sport for the first time. Through our no-cut policy, if a student wishes to play a sport, he or she will become a member of the team. Our student-teacher ratio of 6:1 allows for a teacher to understand each student as a whole child, aware of their unique passions and interests. We support and encourage our students as they grow into well-rounded, confident leaders who demonstrate the importance of integrity in all endeavors.
  • Servitium- Our students come from all parts of Long Island, Brooklyn, and Queens, as well as countries abroad. As they learn to appreciate one another's individual qualities, they are contributing to a strong, globally aware community. Everyone benefits from a vibrant community, and ours is a microcosm of the world at its best. We teach our students to be active contributors both in and out of school through our Community Service program, which spans all three divisions. Paired with our curriculum, students learn how to be aware of the needs of society and our own school community, while encouraging thoughtful response to these needs on a personal level. These personal contributions are supported through the activities of student clubs and are woven into the fabric of the school's daily life. Lower School students run a school store which raises money to save the rainforest, Middle School students participate in a Global Concerns club to raise community awareness of humanitarian issues, and some Upper School students recently built low-income housing in Costa Rica. We encourage our students to engage in a wide variety of service opportunities that emphasize the spirit of altruistic volunteerism. Lawrence Woodmere Academy graduates are socially responsible, culturally aware citizens who make the goal of helping others a lifelong commitment.
