At the Shady Side Academy Middle School, students learn to balance school work, learn time management and begin the transition to young adulthood. The transition from elementary to middle school is aided every step by caring faculty who get to know each child as an individual, offering encouragement while expecting the best from each child both personally and academically.
The rigorous academic curriculum has a balance of inquiry, skill development, critical thinking and subject mastery. It helps students build excellent study habits, while encouraging intellectual curiosity and cooperative learning skills. New ideas are celebrated, and openness to them is encouraged. We also emphasize the skills necessary to become confident learners and build upon those skills at every level.
The Middle School offers a 1-to-1 iPad program for all students in grades 6-8, and teachers integrate technology meaningfully into the classroom to enhance learning. Other technology resources include SMART Boards in every classroom and two computer labs.
Shady Side Middle School offers a number of different options for students to participate in the performing arts, including Fall Drama, Winter Musical, Chorus, Core Choir, String Ensemble, Select Strings, Concert Band, and Jazz Band.
Shady Side Academy Middle School offers three languages (Chinese, Latin and Spanish). Students explore all three options in sixth grade and choose one to pursue in seventh and eighth grade. SSA also offers six levels of math, giving students the opportunity to enter the course best suited for them.
From football to lacrosse, Shady Side Academy students have access to 18 sports at the Middle School level. All students have an activity/athletics period every afternoon where they can choose from a variety of sports as well as non-athletic options such as drama, Science Olympiad, studio art and literary magazine.
At the Middle School, there are many activities that can't be located on the curriculum list, such as Science Olympiad, robotics, rocketry, literary magazine and the philosophy club. These activities not only support our efforts in the classroom but also add an important social dynamic, further enriching the daily experience for students.
Shady Side Academy's three campuses offer students the opportunity to make important transitions. When students graduate from the Middle School, they are well prepared to manage the collegiate atmosphere at our Senior School.
Shady Side Academy Middle School is set on 35 rolling acres in the suburban Fox Chapel neighborhood of Pittsburgh. The main building includes a dedicated sixth-grade wing, gymnasium, cafeteria/auditorium and library. The campus grounds include a garden and two athletic fields; students also use the outstanding athletic facilities at the SSA Senior School campus just down the road.
Shady Side Academy is a nationally respected private school in Pittsburgh for boys and girls in grades pre-kindergarten through 12, with an optional boarding experience in high school.
Three age-specific campuses with extraordinary resources, teachers who actively mentor, a forward-thinking curriculum, a diverse and inclusive community, and a legacy of alumni accomplishments all inspire Shady Side students to high achievement in academics, the arts and athletics, and to meaningful ambitions in life.  For more information, please view our online admissions viewbook at www.ShineAtShadySide.org.
